Sarah writes from her old forge homestead in Far North Queensland, where the rainforest creeps right up to her back door, and her three-bay barn has turned into an unofficial wildlife refuge. She never knows what she'll find sheltering in there—one week it was a family of possums; another, it'll be a particularly stubborn python called Scrubby who roams around and seems to think he owns the place.
Living on the edge of the Australian bush means her writing desk comes with a soundtrack of kookaburras, cicadas, and the occasional commotion when something large moves through the undergrowth. Her husband is highly amused that she finds inspiration in their daily encounters, with everything from tiny micro bats, to the neighbour's wandering cattle, and with all these moments finding their way into both her children's books, and her adult fiction.
Sarah's days are spent balancing renovation projects (the old forge keeps throwing surprises), tending a garden that is embattled by the tropical heat, and stealing a little bit of time for painting when the light hits the rainforest just right. But her favourite inspiration comes from slow living, and slow cooking—long dinners around the fire pit, where friends and family gather, as the sun sets behind the trees. These firelit evenings, and sharing stories over yummy meals cooked on the open flames, often spark the best ideas for her books.
Sarah writes the kinds of stories she wants to read herself—ones that make children laugh, and adults remember what wonder feels like. The best part? Her office window overlooks a world where every day brings something unexpected, and that wild, beautiful chaos—along with the warmth of community around her fire pit—ends up on every page she writes.
